The Business Owners Policy, Explained

One policy that wraps general liability and commercial property together, usually for less than buying the two separately. We write BOPs for small and mid-size businesses across Nassau County, and we'll tell you up front if your operation is the kind that needs separate policies instead.

What a Business Owners Policy Includes

It's one packaged policy built around the two coverages nearly every small business needs, at a combined rate lower than buying each one separately. Here's what's inside.

General Liability

Pays third-party claims against your business: bodily injury, property damage, personal injury, and advertising injury. This is the foundation of the whole commercial program.

Commercial Property

Covers your business building if you own it, plus contents, equipment, inventory, and improvements, against fire, theft, vandalism, and other covered perils.

Business Income

Replaces lost income and keeps paying the continuing expenses if a covered loss forces you to suspend or scale back operations for a while.

Equipment Breakdown

Pays for sudden mechanical or electrical breakdown of essential business equipment: boilers, HVAC, electrical systems and the like.

Data Breach / Cyber (optional)

Many BOPs let you add cyber liability coverage. It matters more every year for any business that stores customer data.

Hired & Non-owned Auto (optional)

Liability coverage when employees use personal or rented vehicles for business purposes. It fills a gap that standard GL policies leave open.

What's Generally Not Covered

  • Workers' compensation (required separately)
  • Professional liability / E&O (required separately)
  • Commercial auto for owned vehicles
  • Health and disability insurance
  • Liquor liability for bars/restaurants (requires separate coverage)

Common Questions

Answered the way we'd answer them on the phone.

Who Qualifies for a BOP in NY?

BOPs are designed for small to mid-size businesses — typically those with under $5M in revenue and fewer than 100 employees, operating in low-to-moderate risk industries. Contractors, manufacturers, and bars often need separate policies.

Is a BOP Cheaper Than Buying GL and Property Separately?

Yes — BOPs are specifically designed to be more affordable than purchasing general liability and commercial property as separate policies. The savings vary by carrier but are typically meaningful.

Can I Customize a BOP for My Specific Business?

Yes. Most BOP carriers offer endorsements to tailor the policy — adding cyber coverage, employment practices liability, hired/non-owned auto, and other coverages specific to your industry.

Do I Still Need Workers' Comp If I Have a BOP?

Yes. Workers' compensation is required separately by NY law and is not included in any BOP. We can bundle your BOP with a workers' comp policy for a complete commercial insurance package.
