Contractors Insurance in New York

We write full programs for New York trades: general liability, tools and equipment, completed operations and workers' comp. When a GC won't let you on site without a certificate, we can usually bind coverage and issue the COI the same day. Rough claim history? We place those risks too.

What a NY Contractors Program Includes

Every job site carries its own risk, and every contract spells out the paper you need before you can start. Here's what a working program usually combines.

Contractors General Liability

The core of the program, and the policy virtually every GC, property owner and municipality in NY asks to see. Covers bodily injury, property damage and completed operations arising from your work.

Tools & Equipment

Covers your owned tools and equipment against theft, vandalism and damage, whether they're on the job site, in transit or back at the shop.

Completed Operations

Covers bodily injury or property damage that shows up after the work is finished. Think of a structural issue discovered months after a renovation wraps.

Commercial Auto

Covers the work trucks, vans and other vehicles you use for business. A personal auto policy won't cover commercial use.

Workers' Compensation

Required by NY law for any contractor with employees. Pays medical bills and lost wages for workers injured on the job, and most GCs require it even for subs.

Umbrella / Excess GL

Adds liability limits above your primary GL. Larger contracts, public work and municipal jobs in New York often require it.

What's Generally Not Covered

  • Professional design errors (requires professional liability)
  • Intentional damage or fraud
  • Damage to your own work product (faulty workmanship exclusion)
  • Employee theft (requires a crime policy)
  • Pollution liability (requires a separate environmental policy)

Common Questions

Answered the way we'd answer them on the phone.

What GL Limits Do NY Contractors Typically Need?

Most GCs and property owners require $1M/$2M as a minimum. NYC and municipal jobs often require $2M/$4M or higher. We'll match the exact limits your contracts call for.

Do I Need Workers' Comp If I'm a Sole Proprietor with No Employees?

In NY, sole proprietors in construction trades are generally required to carry workers' comp or file for an exemption. Many GCs require it regardless. We'll walk you through what applies to your situation.

How Fast Can I Get a Certificate of Insurance?

For most contractors GL policies, we can bind coverage and issue a COI the same day — sometimes within the hour. We know job sites can't wait.

Can I Get Coverage If I've Had Claims or Cancellations?

Yes. We work with specialty markets and non-standard carriers who cover contractors with difficult histories. Tell us your situation and we'll find options.
