A Contractor Program, Not Just a Policy

Most Long Island trades end up carrying three or four coverages that have to work together. Buying them piecemeal from different places is how gaps happen.

General Liability

The core of the program, and the policy every GC, property owner and municipality in New York asks to see before you start.

Workers' Compensation

Mandatory in New York with employees, and the certificate is checked constantly on job sites. Rates hinge on your class codes and payroll.

Tools & Equipment

Covers what gets stolen off the truck or the site. Ask any trade on Long Island how often that happens.

Commercial Auto

Work trucks and vans belong on a commercial policy. A personal auto policy will deny the claim once it learns the vehicle was being used for business.

What Underwriters Will Ask You

  • Years in business, annual gross revenue and number of employees or subs
  • What percentage of work you subcontract out, and whether you collect certificates from your subs
  • Maximum height or stories you work at
  • Whether you touch structural or load-bearing work
  • Pre-1978 homes and lead-safe certification, for anyone disturbing paint
  • Claims in the last three years

Common Questions

How quickly can you get me a certificate for a job starting tomorrow?
If coverage is already bound, same day and usually within the hour during office hours. If you need the policy itself written first, call (516) 216-5600 rather than using the form so we can move it immediately.
Why does subcontracting change my rate so much?
Because uninsured subs become your exposure. Carriers ask what percentage of your work is subbed out and whether you collect certificates from every sub. Contractors who consistently collect certificates from insured subs get materially better pricing.
Do you cover roofing and other trades that get declined a lot?
Yes. Roofing, and anything involving height or structural work, is declined by plenty of standard carriers, which is exactly why an independent agency matters. We place these through specialty markets that want the business.
What if I only need coverage for one job?
Tell us the job and the certificate requirements and we will tell you honestly whether a short-term or project-specific solution exists for your trade, or whether an annual policy ends up cheaper. It often does.
